Common Resume and Interviewing Errors

The other day I was asked to list a couple of obvious job search errors; specifically for resume writing and interviewing.  Here are the very common ones.  Can you come up with a few more?

Resume
1. Using the same resume for every job posting. Instead, tailor your resume and cover letter to each and every opening and use the key words found in the job description.
2. The resume that contains format, grammatical and spelling errors. It is surprising, given the software tools we have that people fail to use the spell and grammar checkers.  Job seekers also need a real person to review their resumes for common errors and content.

Interviews
1. Lack of preparation: This covers two areas; not being prepared with examples of real-life accomplishments of past behavior and not having thoughtful, meaningful questions for the interviewer.
2. Inappropriate questions: The interviewee should never, ever inquire about salary, benefits, or vacation during the initial interview. Should the hiring company approach the subject then it is appropriate to respond.
3. Dress: Not dressing appropriately for an interview is a major detractor.  LinkedIn, the internet and other means of social media will allow anyone to learn of the business culture of any organization.  Find out the dress code and dress up a notch higher.

Finally, every interviewee should send a thank you note to the interviewers.  Both electronic and paper versions should be used.  Not only is this a common courtesy but it allows the the interviewer to add a  sentence or two highlighting his or her fit with the organization which in turn, allow the interviewer to remember the individual.
